Report: Bonds to sue over steroid allegations in book Barry Bonds' lawyer said he plans to sue the authors and publisher of a book alleging the outfielder used an array of performance-enhancing drugs, including steroids. The Chronicle reported that Rains will ask a federal judge to initiate contempt proceedings "for the use of illegally obtained" grand jury transcripts the authors used in writing the book. ESPN's Pedro Gomez reported that the planned lawsuit is not a libel suit. Rains said he will file the suit under California's unfair competition law. --- So, he's not filing suit for libel, questioning the accuracy of the book. Instead, he's suing concerning the illegally obtained grand jury questioning. A waste of time, a poor public relations driven move. --- Update: SAN FRANCISCO -- A judge on Friday denied a bid by Barry Bonds' lawyers to block the authors and publishers from making money on a book claiming the San Francisco Giants' slugger used steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. Bonds' attorneys say the book's authors, publisher Gotham Books, the San Francisco Chronicle and Sports Illustrated, which published excerpts of the book, should be held liable for publishing "illegally obtained grand jury transcripts." But Judge James Warren said free speech protections shielded the defendants from such accusations and that he thought Bonds' lawsuit had little chance of success. |
